W H A T   W E   D O THE ELDERS at the First Presbyterian Church of Avenel

This is an invitation for you to become an elder in our church.  Some of the things we do are:

Conduct the business of the Church Attend Presbytery meetings Chair committees Serve Communion Serve as Worship Assistants

THE BOOK OF ORDER OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (USA) STATES FOR THE OFFICE OF ELDER: "As there were in Old Testament time elders for the government of the people, so the New Testament church provided persons with particular gifts to share in governing the ministry. Elders are chosen by the people. Together with ministers of the Word and Sacrament, they exercise leadership, government, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a particular church, as well as the church at large, including ecumenical relationships.  They shall serve faithfully as members of the session.  When elected commissioners to higher governing bodies, elders participate and vote with the same authority as ministers of the Word and Sacrament, and they are eligible for any office." "Elders should be persons of faith, dedication and good judgment.  Their manner of life should be a demonstration of the Christian gospel, both within the church and in the world." AS A ELDER OF THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF AVENEL, RESPONSIBILITIES/REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:: Be a member of the church Worship regularly Attend Session meetings (3rd Tuesday of each month) Attend Commission/Committee meetings (1st Tuesday of a month Serve communion in worship Assist the Pastor in worship, if willing
