It is a great joy to begin my ministry with The First Presbyterian Church of
Avenel during the Easter Season. I look forward to celebrating the power of His
resurrection in our time together.
After graduating from Hightstown High School in New Jersey, I attended Montreat-Anderson
Junior College in Montreat, North Carolina. My faith grew under the guidance of
Christian friends, the Chaplain the Rev. Dr. Calvin Theilmann, and the
collegiate Sunday School teacher Ruth Graham (the wife of Billy Graham). Next, I
went to Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, graduating with a Bachelor of
Arts, majoring in Philosophy. My Masters of Divinity Degree is from
Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in So. Hamilton, Massachusetts. In 1990, I
earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree from McCormick Theological Seminary (one of
our denomination’s seminaries) in Chicago, IL.
I met my wife, Sharyn Wilson, while a student assistant at Andover Baptist
Church in Massachusetts. We were married in 1971, my last year of seminary. We
moved to northern Vermont, serving the E. Craftsbury Presbyterian Church. Our
two children were born in Vermont. Cheryl is married to Peter Elliman and lives
in San Francisco. Joel lives in Lake Tahoe and so does his girlfriend, Karyn
Stanely. My sister, Doris Brockmann, lives in Florida. In 1978, our family moved
to Warren, New Jersey and for twenty years served the same congregation.
In 2001, following a Sabbatical in which I wrote the manuscript for the book,
Hang On Until You Get the Blessing, I began Interim Ministry. I have been
the Interim Pastor of the 2nd Presbyterian Church of Rahway, New Jersey, the
Sayreville Presbyterian Church in New Jersey, and the 1st Presbyterian Church of
Springfield, New Jersey.
My hope for our time together is that we together might experience spiritual
growth. Therefore, I challenge you to be faithful in worship attendance, while
seeking to grow in the knowledge of Christ, and fellowship with each other.
In Christ's Service,
Rev. Dr. Charles H. Baier |
