HIS HANDS COMMUNITY OUTREACH MINISTRY

The His Hands Community Outreach Ministry is a ministry dedicated to helping local area residents who are less fortunate than we are. Our church office has always had a large number of local residents stop in for some sort of assistance. This ministry is a response to this issue.
We hope not only to help those in our community who are in need, but we hope to help them up and out of their situation. One of the ways we accomplish this goal is through the "His Hands Clothes Closet." The Closet is supplied entirely by donations from our congregation and the local community. We take in clothing items in good, clean and wearable condition. We also accept shoes, accessories and linens. The Clothes Closet is open the last Tuesday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sorting day is the third Monday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
We also help the needy in our community by supplying appliances and furniture to them as well. Quite often, if a family is able to get themselves out of one of the welfare motels on the highway, it is all they can do to afford the rent on an apartment. Furnishing the apartment turns out to be a luxury. His Hands accepts donations of household appliances (large or small) and any furniture that is in good, clean and safe working condition.
We are always in need of volunteers for jobs such as sorting, organizing, working the Clothes Closet while open, and especially men for picking up/delivering and moving furniture, etc. Let us know how you would like to help be a part of this important work that God has given our church to do.

FAMILY PROMISE

Our church is one of the five Woodbridge churches partnered with seven churches in the Plainfield/Dunellen area that house and feed temporarily homeless persons. Our church is generally a host three times a year for one week each time. Being a host church takes approximately 50 volunteers. The volunteers shop, cook and deliver a hot and nourishing dinner; set up and break down portable beds; serve dinner and socialize with guests, including children; make beds; wash, fold and pack the linens for the next time; stay overnight with the guests; and load up trucks and vans and transport our guests to the next host church.
The mission of Family Promise is to help low-income families nationwide to achieve lasting independence and to redress the underlying causes of poverty and homelessness.
Family Promise was founded on the belief that Americans are compassionate people who want to make a difference. Its promise has been to link those in need with those who want to help.
Family Promise works to accomplish its mission through 4 programs areas: (1) Interfaith Hospitality Networks, which provide shelter, meals and comprehensive support services to homeless families; (2) Family Mentoring, which helps prevent homelessness by training volunteers to be advisors and advocates to low-income families; (3) Just Neighbors, an interactive educational program which raises awareness of the root causes of poverty and homelessness as the first step in establishing community-based responses; and (4) Community Initiatives, which foster local Interfaith Hospitality Network outgrowth programs such as transitional housing, job training, childcare and literacy.

CHURCH WORLD SERVICE CROP WALK

Each fall, many members of our church walk or sponsor a walker in our annual Woodbridge Area CROP WALK. CROP WALKS are interfaith community events, involving people from all walks of life, to help Church World Service end hunger around the block and around the world.
Each year more than a quarter million CROP WALKERS put their hearts and "soles" in motion to help stop hunger, one step at a time. The steps they take raise awareness and funds to help support long-term development programs in more than 80 countries, including the United States. Locally organized CROP WALKS bring together people of all ages and faiths in a people-to-people network of local and global caring.

CHURCH WORLD SERVICE TOOLS & BLANKETS PROGRAM

Each Mother's Day, we invite our members to honor their mothers and grandmothers with a special gift to the Church World Service Tools of Hope & Blanket Program.
Through the Tools & Blankets Program, congregations and groups around the country reach out in compassion to people in need in more than 80 countries. Simply said, the right tool at the right time can make a world of difference in the lives of a family or a community.
Church World Service responds to disasters in a "wholistic" manner. They respond immediately after a disaster happens, but also commit to stand with people in the long process of recovery and rehabilitation as well.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

The purpose of Middlesex County Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate sub-standard housing in the county. To help reach that goal, it refurbishes and/or constructs houses which are sold at a reduced cost to very low income individuals and families. This is not a "handout" but a "hand-up" to disadvantaged brothers and sisters. Middlesex County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat International.
Each fall, members of our church and the community participate in the Habitat for Humanity Bicycle Tour and ride 12, 25, 35, 50, 60 or 100 miles. All monies raised go to Habitat's local chapter to buy supplies and materials.

THE WALTER HOVING HOME

The Walter Hoving Home is a place of hope and healing. It is a Christian-based rehabilitation home for women whose lives have been shattered by a lifestyle of drugs and alcohol. Its purpose is to free them of their addictions, introduce these women to Christ and help them build a foundation upon the word of God. It is a not-for-profit charitable organization and is funded through donations of interested individuals and churches.

TWO CENTS A MEAL PROGRAM

This church program is a way for the whole family to get involved in helping the needy. It works like this: For each meal you have during the day, each family member contributes 2 cents to a family "pot," "bank" or "collection jar." Then, once a month, you place your savings in the water jug located at the back of the Sanctuary. If you prefer to give one or two dollars a month instead of 2 cents a meal, your gift will be most appreciated. All monies collected are given to the Family Promise program to help people who are temporarily homeless.

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING

Each year at Easter, our church takes a collection for the One Great Hour of Sharing program. Since 1949, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God's love with people experiencing need. Our gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development that help people find safe refuge, start new lives, and work together to strengthen their families and communities.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD (Samaritan's Purse)

Each year, Operation Christmas Child delivers millions of gift-filled shoe boxes to hurting children around the world. Our church supports this mission by filling shoe boxes with toys, school supplies, hygiene items and other presents in time for the Christmas holidays.
